◆Update 16.1.9737◆

`

Season Thirteen

Ranked Season and Events Update
Ranked Season and Events Update

Back at the start of Season Twelve, we mentioned we’d be unlocking seasonal content (biomes, maps and modes) across the board to allow them to be enjoyed more while also starting an event rotation to ensure there are plenty of chances to earn a specific profile portrait or banner item.

With this season, all previously available seasonal game modes, biomes and maps are now available at any time in custom games – note that we have removed these options from Quick Match to allow for more effective matchmaking. And starting this season, we’re also rolling out a comprehensive calendar for Ranked Season and Event rotations. In the past, Ranked Seasons have generally been tied to an update; however, to enable more predictable ranked seasons in the future, we’re switching away from this format.

Moving forward, there will be four three-month seasons per year, all accompanied by a variety of event challenges. While we’re kicking off this year’s Summer Season early on May 7th, **in the future, all ranked seasons will start on the first day of a month at 10 a.m. PT and end three months later on the last day of the month at 10 a.m. PT. **

Ranked Season Calendar

Spring Season: 1st March → last day of May Summer Season: 1st June → last day of August Fall Season: 1st September → last day of November Winter Season: 1st December → last day of February

Event Calendar
Map Pool Rotation

We’re excited to share a new Ranked Map Pool rotation, featuring a fresh mix of maps and a new sheep spawn distribution. This update adds new maps to the pool alongside returning favorites. We’re looking forward to seeing how these additions and balance changes shape the ranked ladder.

**1v1 Ranked Map Pool **

  • Dry Arabia

  • Sunkenlands

  • Rocky River

  • King of the Hill

  • Archipelago

  • Waterholes

  • Relic River

  • Wasteland

  • Hill and Dale

**Team Ranked Map Pool **

  • Dry Arabia

  • Rocky River

  • Sunkenlands

  • Forts

  • Archipelago

  • African Waters

  • Gorge

  • West Lake

  • Hedgemaze

New Map Spotlight - Coming with Yue Fei's Legacy DLC

We’re thrilled to be releasing four new maps alongside Yue Fei’s Legacy on May 7th, some of which will be included in ranked pools. You can find more details on each map below.

[table noborder=1]Ascension A river cascades down a steep hill. At the top of the hill lie riches in gold and stone. Teams face off across the river from each other and must work their way up the hill for access to gold, stone, trade and sacred sites. The river is too deep at the bottom to cross but is passable higher up the hill. Ascend the hill and stake your claim! Fangs Jagged mountains rise up to the sky surrounded by dense woods and a shrouded layer of stealth woods. Penetrate the stealth woods to harvest lumber but beware of the wolves! This mostly open map still provides some opportunity for fortifications. Danger and opportunity await near the fangs. Snake River A mighty river snakes around opposing teams creating protection and opportunity. Use the river strategically to gather fish, help defend your base, and grant you access to resources. **West Lake ** A large shallow lake dominates the center of the map. The lake is traversable by foot and at its center lies a difficult to defend sacred site. Docks and ships cannot be built on this map, making control of the center of the map more challenging.

Sheep Distribution

The new DLC maps, as well as Dry Arabia, Baltic, and Gorge feature an updated Sheep distribution which places more sheep near each player’s starting base while leaving a smaller number of neutral sheep across the map.

We will be monitoring the results and decide whether to expand this change to more maps or adjust further.

Season Twelve

Ranked Season and Events Update

As we mentioned way back at the start of Season Eleven, we’re aware that our seasonal approach means you’ve had limited access to exciting game modes, maps and biomes, and events. With that in mind, starting with Season Twelve, we’ll be adjusting our approach to seasons. Moving forward you’ll see:

  • Seasonal content – such as game modes, maps and biomes – unlocked and made permanently available. We started this in Season Eleven with by making Map Monsters and Enchanted Grove permanently available, and we’re excited to share that with Season Twelve, you’ll be able to play as much of the Map Monsters, Full Moon and Season’s Feast game modes as you’d like in custom matches. Game modes will now come with a pre-selected biome for best experience. However, this can still be tweaked in the map options.

  • Rotating through events! In the past, events and the rewards that came with them were time-exclusive. Moving forward, we’ll be rotating through these fun and familiar events to ensure you’re able to collect the items you may have missed out on.

During Season Twelve, we’ll be bringing back a few classics meant to celebrate the season (both spooky and delightful) with Hallow’s Hearth, Season’s Feast and Something in the Water.

Hallow’s Hearth – Event 1

The wolves are howling, and a chill wind can be heard whispering through the trees. Get ready for a spooktacular second edition of Hallow’s Hearth with terrifying treats and monstrously fun challenges!

**Login between October 30th at 10:00AM PT (17:00 UTC) and December 4th to stake your claim. **

In addition, we have made several improvements to the Full Moon mode:

  • Added a new night atmosphere to the Full Moon game mode, to be transitioned to during the Moon Surge event. The atmosphere should transition back to the biome’s initial one after the event is over.

  • Werewolf unit name and description updated to be more accurate.

  • New werewolf spawning VFX have been added.

It’s time to face a powerful enemy, the wolves roam the land, they have grown larger and more powerful than before. When the Moon is full, the wolves will attack, build your walls and prepare for their approach.

Season’s Feast – Event 2

This event is full of gifts to celebrate the Season! We have many challenges and rewards to customize your profile to match the season of giving. As well as a brand-new game mode filled with gifts to get you those victories! Keep your eyes on the battlefield and see how many gifts you can find.

**Login between December 5th at 10:00am PT (1:00pm ET / 18:00 UTC) and February 5th to share in the season’s festivities! **

In addition, we have made several improvements to the Season’s Feast game mode:

  • Improved spawn logic for the gift boxes so that they are not spawning in inaccessible locations and to maintain balance.

  • Gift boxes can be easily located with the new visual indicator. See the presents fall from above, find and collect them all over the map.

Something in the Water – Event 3

The relaxing waves have brought back old friends but with new rewards! They might be monsters, but you’ll be the one sinking your teeth into the challenges while you take on the competition.

Improvements to the Map Monsters mode:

  • Improved spawn logic for the monsters preventing them from spawning in inaccessible locations.

  • Monster discovery results in the monster despawning with a visual effect. **Login February 6th at 10:00am PT (1:00 PM ET / 18:00 UTC) through April 2nd at 10:00AM PT (1:00 PM ET / 17:00 UTC) to claim your bounty! **

Ranked Season Twelve Updates

Get ready to dive back into the action! Season Twelve is officially kicking off, and it’s set to be a big celebration.

This season is about honoring the heart of the game, and the upcoming months are packed with beloved game modes & major holiday festivities! But don’t forget about the main event: We’re dropping a massive, brand-new DLC that will change the way you play.

Mark your calendars! The season begins on October 30th and runs all the way through April 2nd! You won’t want to miss a single challenge, reward or event.

Map Pool Rotation

We’re excited to share that new maps coming with the Dynasties of the East expansion are making their debut appearance in Ranked Map Pools, starting October 30th! We’re feeling confident in these maps and can’t wait to hear what you think of them! Test your mettle on this season’s new terrain and unique mechanics. **1v1 Ranked Map Pool **

  • Altai –> Flankwoods

  • Archipelago –> Boulder Bay

  • Canal –> Ocean Gateway

  • Enlightened Horizon –> Golden Heights

  • Rocky River –> Relic River

  • Hill and Dale –> Craters

  • Carmel –> Cliffside **Team Ranked Map Pool **

  • African Waters –> Canyon

  • Hedgemaze –> Craters

  • Nagari –> Ocean Gateway

  • Waterholes –> Continental

  • Lipany –> Hidden Valley

  • Hideout –> Flankwoods

  • Enlightened Horizon –> Prairie

New Maps

We’re thrilled to be releasing 8 new maps with the Dynasties of the East expansion on November 4th, but you can get a sneak preview of three of them already as we add them directly into our Season Twelve Map Pool. [table noborder=1]

Craters

A meteor shower leaves behind deep craters that scar the surface of the land; some have filled with water and provide limited fishing opportunities while others contain meteorite fragments which can be gathered by daring Villagers. Meteorites can be mined for both Gold and Stone at the same time, but such a precious resource will surely be a catalyst for conflict.

Canyon

A waterlogged canyon snakes its way through the center of the map, dividing teams equally on either side. Teams can reach each other by ramps that lead down to the base of the canyon and by crossing the shallow water there, perhaps catching the glint of Relics reflecting on the water’s surface. Town Centers perch precariously on the Canyon edge; it’s rumored that if you watch carefully enough, enemy movements can be seen at the edge of the fog of war.

Ocean Gateway

Surrounded by rugged cliffs, the four gateways provide critical access to the bounty of fish and naval trade available at the map’s edge. However, limited space for docks and wide-open flanks make Ocean Gateway a challenging balancing act between both land and water.

Map Pool Biomes

With this release we have also updated all the available biomes for each map while playing in ranked or unranked, meaning that you’ll see more biome variation than before and the appearance of new biomes in multiplayer matches.

Matchmaking Improvements

As you may have noticed, earlier this month, we made a change via the server to improve matchmaking. You should notice faster queue times in Quick Match and Ranked!

Manor Rework

House of Lancaster’s gameplay will be changing this season, with a much-requested rework to how Manors generate resources. Manors now generate less resources passively, instead Manors have an aura in which Villagers generate Food and Wood when they are within the Aura. Lancaster players will need to strategically place their Manors to make sure they capture as many Villagers as possible.

These changes will take time to implement and fully test, and we are targeting them for an early summer release. Thank you so much for the bug reports and your patience as we try to get to the bottom of this.

Age of Empires IV – Patch 13.0.4343

Hi Age of Empires IV community! We have heard your feedback regarding the variant civilizations released with Age of Empires IVKnights of Cross and Rose. It seems that the House of Lancaster hit the battlefield with a little too much muscle, so we are scaling back their power in today’s patch to get them to a more balanced state. We are also adjusting some of the Knights Templar’s numbers to redistribute their power more fairly.

We truly appreciate all your feedback—while we anticipate these tweaks will get things where we want them to be, we will continue to monitor player feedback and balance suggestions as the ranked season progresses!

◆Update 13.0.4178◆

`

DLC Spotlight: Knights of Cross and Rose

We will be launching our Season Ten update alongside our newest expansion, Knights of Cross and Rose! This DLC features new variant civilizations for the French and English, as well as a new game mode and ten maps.

Variant Civilization: Knights Templar

The Knights Templar are making their debut as a new variant civilization for the French. Founded with the goal to protect pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, the Templars became renowned for their financial sophistication and defensive fortresses in the Levant. We aimed to highlight their cultural and military excellence through unique, highly flexible gameplay.

The Knights Templar do not progress to the next age when a landmark is built, but rather age up with Town Centers. This allows them to select one of three Templar Commanderies per age, each providing their own set of powerful unique units and features. For example, players can select the Kingdom of Poland for a tanky Heavy Cavalry unit and a massive boost to Cavalry charge damage, or the Knights Hospitaller for a new Man-At-Arms variant and a civilization-wide boost to economic unit heath and healing received.

This variant civilization foregoes the French’s standard Trade Economy trait in favor of the new Pilgrimage trait. Instead of relying on Traders for gold generation, the Knights Templar gain gold by sending Pilgrims to Sacred Sites. In addition to this, they also reveal all Sacred Sites at the start of the game, so be sure to use this extra intel to plan out your pilgrimages!

This only scratches the surface of the many tricks the Knights Templar have up their sleeves, and we are beyond excited for Knights of Cross and Rose players to maximize their potential. The Knights Templar’s creative, game-bending playstyle not only shakes up established gameplay norms, but brings the rich history of one of France’s most renowned military orders to life.

Variant Civilization: House of Lancaster

Fearless combatants in the Wars of the Roses, the House of Lancaster established themselves as Europe’s most dominant military force after winning the famous battle of Agincourt against the French. The House of Lancaster variant civilization showcases their undeniable military capability while also providing a streamlined, intuitive gameplay experience.

The House of Lancaster’s notorious prowess at range is well illustrated through their unique units. The variant civilization replaces the Longbowman with the all-new Yeoman unit. Not only is the Yeoman stronger and more mobile than your average archer, they can also rain down a volley of arrows with their unique Synchronized Shot ability. We all know it can be a delicate art balancing your army’s survivability with enough range to whittle down the enemy. However, you can have the best of both worlds with the House of Lancaster’s Earl’s Guard unit! This unique Man-At-Arms possesses the bulk and power you’d expect from a Heavy Infantry unit, but can also toss daggers at range to deal huge burst damage.

In addition to its powerful military units, the House of Lancaster gains several new traits that help players amass a veritable horde of resources. The Wool Industries trait grants players free sheep when a Town Center is built and allows villagers to gather from sheep faster. Additionally, players can construct several Manors throughout the game, providing the House of Lancaster a consistent stream of gold for each one built. The Manor’s abilities only grow as new unique Technologies are unlocked.

The House of Lancaster will provide a familiar, comfortable gameplay experience for Age of Empires IV players while also offering a bevy of unique traits to keep things fresh. We think this new variant civilization will be a favorite for new and old fans alike!

Game Mode: Historical Battles

In the Knights of Cross and Rose expansion, players can dive into four new single player Historical Battles. Unlike the more narrative-centric campaigns, these scenarios focus on key moments throughout the history of the Knights Templar and the House of Lancaster. By narrowing our scope to singular, larger-than-life battles, we are able to provide an even richer historical experience than Age of Empires IV players have seen before!

In contrast to previous game modes, players are scored and ranked based on their performance during each Historical Battle rather than solely on their ability to secure a victory. Each battle is filled with secrets and traps for players to uncover, which can significantly affect their final score. Players can explore the intricacies of each map and use their discoveries to improve future playthroughs. Historical Battles are designed to be more than a one-time experience – we want players to feel compelled to attempt them time and time again!

It’s time to flex your true strength. Season Ten runs from April 8th to June 25th.

Our first event of the season, Clash of Champions, is an opportunity to show your excellence in all forms, whether it be your skills in archery or jousting on horseback. Dominate the competition and display your rewards proudly.

While it can be tempting to focus exclusively on capturing them, your opponents can capture them back to steal the benefits. Just be warned that the wolves of the Wolf Den are more dangerous than ever before! More information can be found in the Maps section of the patch notes.
