Scrap Mechanic is finally jumping into 1.0 with a blast in what is by far our biggest update yet! Along with extensive optimizations that dramatically improve both game performance and visuals, this update features the long-awaited Drilling Thunder expansion. It revamps Survival mode with new locations, a ton of fresh content, and a full story. Whether you are a veteran mechanic whose constructions are collecting dust, or a newcomer ready to engineer incredible machines, the time to get back into Scrap Mechanic is now!

Major Changes & New Features

Story and NPCs Embark on the main quest to find out why the bots have gone rogue on the Farming Planet. But most importantly, find a way back home after your ship crashed! For the first time in Scrap Mechanic, the Survival experience comes with a full story from beginning to end, featuring fully voice-acted NPCs.

World Overhaul The current world has been expanded with brand-new locations and growlabs to explore. Clear out newly updated ruins, meet random NPCs who need your help, and collect fun rewards! The terrain has also gone through major changes, featuring beautiful new tiles as well as reworked terrain generation. Drive through new forest roads and cross the desert biome, but avoid the tornadoes… or don’t!

New Building Parts For all you builders out there, a ton of new building parts have been added, allowing players to build completely unique creations that were never possible before! There are a massive amount of new blocks, parts, and interactive parts to get creative with. Best of all, these are also available in Creative mode right away!

New Enemies Previously, we only had five bots in Survival mode, but that number more than doubles with this update! These new bots create some really interesting encounters and encourage creative new combat and defense gameplay. Survival mode will never be the same now that we’ve let these bots loose into the wild! **Caution! **Be extra careful with the Red Explosive Totebot. He is highly problematic, and we strongly recommend prioritizing him in all combat situations.

The Claygun: Shape the Terrain! We are very excited to introduce the Claygun, available in both Creative and Survival modes! This tool introduces a completely new way of building and shaping the ground. Don’t like the terrain? With the Claygun, you can completely change it! However, if you think you can easily barricade yourself from bots with a little bit of clay, you are in for a surprise. Some bots can dig now!

New Garments to Customize Your Character Let’s admit it, there can never be enough cool new garments to customize your mechanic! This update comes loaded with a bunch of new shirts and outfits to collect. Some are much harder to obtain than others! If you love collecting garments, you will really enjoy this update.

Steam Achievements With the 1.0 release, we have finally added Steam Achievements! There are definitely some wacky ones to hunt down, alongside some really challenging goals for the completionists out there. See if you can unlock them all!

Improved Network Responsiveness This update comes with a massive wave of optimizations, but the one we think multiplayer fans will appreciate the most is the improved network responsiveness for connected players. This drastically smoothens out the multiplayer experience in Scrap Mechanic!

Next-Gen Visual Upgrade!

Get ready for a massive visual overhaul that brings Scrap Mechanic to life like never before. We are introducing a 100% dynamic lighting and weather system that dramatically enhances your immersion, all without requiring expensive ray-tracing hardware!

  • **Next-Gen Lighting: **Experience up to 512 dynamic light sources on-screen at once, delivering flawless volumetric sunlight, smooth day-to-night transitions, and global illumination.

  • A Living, Breathing World: Explore a universe featuring fully volumetric clouds, responsive weather, realistic water rendering, and grass that physically reacts to your character's movements.

  • **Stunning Material Detail: **Enjoy a brand-new custom material system that creates hyper-detailed, lifelike rendering for skin, metal, and foliage.

And Much More!

This is just a summary of the most significant changes, but there is so much more to discover! It is tricky to fit everything we’ve done over the last 6 years into a single list, so we are leaving a lot of it as a surprise for you to find in-game.

A Personal Message from the Dev Team

We are finally moving into version 1.0! Some of us have been working on Scrap Mechanic since 2011. It has defined a huge part of our lives and reflects years of genuine dedication. Scrap Mechanic is a unique game that is technically very challenging to make, but we never gave up, nor did we cut any corners. We are incredibly proud of that. We feel that this massive update truly delivers on the promises we made so many years ago.

Thank you all for your amazing support and patience over the years! Reaching this milestone was only possible because of you. We hope you really enjoy the 1.0 release and the Drilling Thunder update!

Scrap Mechanic - Physics & Wedge Update

Hi Mechanics! We’ve got a surprise update for you today: The “Physics and Wedge Update”!

While the next chapter is still in development, we didn’t want to hold back some exciting features that could enhance your gameplay experience right away. Plus, this gives us the chance to test these features with all of you!

So what’s in here?

Improved Physics This update brings a major overhaul to the physics system, unlocking new possibilities and significantly reducing lag. Creations can now collide with each other, and loose items can be thrown around or stacked in larger amounts.

Our team has worked hard to optimize the physics in Scrap Mechanic, tackling this challenge head-on. While the performance boost will vary depending on your hardware, these improvements should make a noticeable difference! However, this update doesn’t fix issues with large, super-complex creations lagging within themselves, as that’s a separate issue we’re still addressing.

IMPORTANT: New worlds will have the new smart physics on by default. However, old worlds will need to be set to the new physics setting manually. You find this setting under Options > Gameplay > Physics quality – Then select: Smart (Recommended) Good to keep in mind that only the host in multiplayer can adjust the physics quality.

Wedges! We’re thrilled to announce that wedges have finally arrived as a new building block! All block materials now have a wedge version, making it possible to create shapes and designs that weren’t achievable before. We’re excited to see what amazing builds you’ll come up with using this new addition!

Network Optimizations We’ve also made significant improvements to multiplayer performance. With these changes, along with the updated physics, playing with friends should now feel smoother and more enjoyable than ever.

New & Updated Parts This update includes some exciting new parts and tweaks to existing ones. The Farmbot Target Part lets you create your very own shooting range, and the Window with Curtains adds extra flair to your builds by allowing you to open and close them. Additionally, we’ve unlocked some spaceship parts in Creative mode that were previously only available in Survival mode.

We hope you enjoy everything this update has to offer!

At last, a note about the next chapter. We’ve made some amazing progress this year! But we are still not happy with some segments of the chapter that require more work and fixes. We are sorry to keep you waiting so long. We are still hard at work on the next chapter!

Stay creative, The Scrap Mechanic Team

Challenge Mode Update 0.6.0

Calling all Mechanics!

The Challenge Mode update is finally here along with a bunch of other exciting additions!

Initially, our focus was just to wrap up Challenge mode. However, we ended up adding a lot more than that. We ended up with a much bigger and better update that we hope has something for every kind of Mechanic.

**Here are a few highlights from this update: **

Challenge Mode 10 new challenges have been added, for a total of 50. Complete them all and unlock a very special Stuntman outfit that will prove that you have the chops to be a true Scrap Mechanic.

Bots in Challenge Builder Give your custom-made challenges some more oomph with the new Character Spawner part. Spawn bots inside the Challenge Mode and create your own tailor-made shooter or any kind of challenge you can come up with!

Survival Tutorial If you’re new to Scrap Mechanic, you might have trouble coming to grips with Survival mode. With that in mind, we have put together an onboarding experience that lets you learn the ropes that’s both fun and easy! The start of the game now includes a series of quests that teach you the basics, as well as the new Builder Guide part that helps you build a basic vehicle from start to finish.

Optimizations Ragdoll simulation for knocked-out characters has been greatly optimized. This makes big bot raids run a lot smoother when a lot of them ragdoll at the same time. We have also worked on character collision detection, in order to further improve the game's performance.

Improved Mod Support We have worked on greatly improving Mod support, so Modders can have a much wider range of options and possibilities than ever before. Our goal is to allow you to pretty much create your own games within Scrap Mechanic. To show that off, we went ahead and made our own little mod, called Scrap Mechanic Golf. To play it, download it from the Workshop. Then, head to the Game Mode selection and click the new Custom Games button in the upper right corner! What are you waiting for? Get out there and hit ‘em straight!

Scrap Mechanic Golf

Also! new Mods by talented Mod creators are already starting to show up on the Workshop.

This time we would like to highlight Raft Mechanic. A really impressive mod with quests, new parts, tools, and more! If you enjoy Scrap Mechanic and Raft, then this is a great mod to check out. Let's give these skilled creators some love!

Raft Mechanic

Enjoy Mechanics!

Hi Mechanics!

We are closing in on a new update release with a lot of nice new content. Today we are rolling out the first test on the test branch mainly for the mod makers. The Mod Tool has been updated, making it a lot more open and flexible. If you are a mod maker, you will find a lot of new features on the test branch of the Mod Tool. We also updated the scripting API reference pages: https://scrapmechanic.com/api/index.html As some of you might have noticed. We have added two new categories to the Workshop as well. Keep in mind that there will be bugs and issues on the test branch at this stage. But it will get more stable as we keep updating it with new content and fixes in the coming days.

Creative mode update 0.5.0

**Hi Mechanics! ** Creative mode Update 0.5.0 is finally here!

New creative mode worlds Welcome to the new and updated creative mode! Not only did we make it look better to go hand in hand with the survival world but we also finally added water to the creative terrain. All trees can now be cut down and rocks can be drilled. Excellent for testing out ideas for your creations in Survival mode. We also gave the flat world an updated ground texture. The new one should give a much better sense of movement and speed.

New capsules Both bot and animal capsules have been added to creative mode. Place them on the ground then shot or hit a capsule to release them into your world. There is a lot of fun things you can do with these. Check the useful chat commands below.

Bot combat Paint bots in different colors and see them attack each other. This new feature is great fun and allows you to set up large bot fights. The red tape boat also got a slight redesign to make it easy to see the difference between blue and red when painted. We are very happy with this new feature turned out and we are excited to see how you use it.

**Gameplay tab and physics quality slider ** We added a new gameplay tab in the in-game options menu. This tab will let us add a mix of settings in the future for the player to adjust their gameplay and performance. First up is the physics quality slider. This slider is great for when setting up larger bot battles or when you are doing something where a lot of loose parts and blocks fall on the ground. It’s however not useful for creations with bearings unless you want to make wacky creations. This is just one stab towards making the game run even smoother and better. More to come!

Custom main menu You can now decorate your main menu by pressing the blue pen icon on the bottom. This will take you into the main menu world where you can build. You can also spawn your favorite creation from the lift and have it on display. Currently, the main menu does not support moving bearings and is only for static creations.

**New useful chat commands ** Lastly! We also added a lot of fun and useful commands for creative mode.

  • /night - Set night

  • /day - Set day

  • /noaggro - Bots do not aggro players

  • /noaggrocreations - Bots do not aggro creations

  • /aggroall - Notifies all bots of player position

  • /popcapsules - Open all bot and animal capsules

  • /killall - Kills all spawned units

Hi Mechanics!

Last few week we’ve been hard at work on the Creative mode update that we mentioned in our latest devblog. It contains a lot of new things that we need help testing out to make sure it runs well.

Some of these things are updated terrain worlds that now have trees and rocks from survival. We also added water to the terrain and slightly expanded it in size. Something we are really excited to see you try out are the new enemy capsules. These allow you to release bots in to the creative world. You can also paint the bots in other colors to make them turn on each other. This is a fun feature that let’s you set up bot battles. We also made it possible for mechanics to customize their main menu buy clicking on the blue pen icon at the bottom. Keep in mind that bearings can’t be used in the main menu world.

On top of all this we also made a ton of fixes and improvements that we are sure a lot of mechanics will be happy with! One of them is a physics quality slider that can be accessed in-game from the ESC – Option menu. Here you can set how good you want the physics to be. It’s a good slider to have to adjust performance, but also to make some really wacky creations. Give these a try! Please keep in mind that some things are still missing in the test that will be added in the coming days. For example Woc and glowbug Capsules and a few more fixes we are still currently in the works.

Challenge Builder Update 0.3.5 is here!

Hi Mechanics!

It's been a real joy for us to hear about your experiences with the new Challange Mode. We had no idea there was such an impressive amount of skilled mechanics out there that just burned through all 40 challenges in no time!

Thankfully, those 40 were just the beginning. We've only scratched the surface of what we can do with Challange Mode and next up is the Challenge Builder that makes it easy for you and your friends to build and share your own Challange packs on the workshop.

Keep in mind that you have to beat your own challenges to get them approved for sharing on the workshop. This is so we can make sure that all challenges that get uploaded can be completed.

There are already a bunch awesome challenges on the workshop that you can download and play HERE!

While we are at it, work on Survival mode is going great. We are right now doing work on less interesting things in the background of the game that knits the Survival mode together. But we should be back soon with a new devblog with a lot of new things.

We will be back soon with more Scrap Mechanic new!

It’s time to put your creativity to the test in the Master Mechanic Trials, a fun set of challenges all mechanics must take before they’re officially dispatched to the farming planet to perform maintenance on those pesky Farmbots.

The Master Mechanic Trials contain 40 challenges to overcome - and only the truly brilliant mechanical mind will pass them all!

The Challenge mode introduces a whole new mode to Scrap Mechanic where for the first time you’ll need to build things to reach a goal. This is our biggest update by far since initial release and we are super excited to add it to the game. We hope you will have as much fun playing it as we had making it!

With that said, we will keep adding and improving the challenge mode as we move forward in 2019. More challenges will be added. An easy-to-use challenge builder will be added together with general polishing here and there. So please look forward to that as well.

Don’t forget to let us know what more you would like to see in the Challenge Mode.

Check out the update list:

  • Added challenge mode.

  • Added a lot of scripting features that are now available for modders. Check out the Lua Script API for more info.

  • Added a sphere shape type.

  • Fixed a network synchronization issue causing crashes for clients.

We would like to also take this opportunity to thank all of you for sticking with us and being so patient about survival mode since release. 2019 will be an amazing year for all you Scrap Mechanics! We hope you have an amazing festive break!

We hope you will have a great time playing the new Challenge Mode!

Update 0.3.2

Hi Mechanics!

Time for a little improvement update! Thanks to all mechanics for the help testing it out during the test! We got some great feedback as always. We’ve been looking at all the creative ways you use the new explosives and decided to do some further improvements. For example, blowing up larger creations with a lot of explosives should now run a bit smoother. We also did some other fixes!

Check out the update list:

  • Parts that are split of from creations inherit the velocities of the creation.

  • Optimized explosions.

  • The range that explosions remove metal has been reduced.

  • Changed the particle effect that appears on the point where potatoes hit the gas canister.

  • Tweaked the explosion impulse on players.

  • Fixed connect tool attaching to invisible gas canister connection points.

  • Fixed a networking issue that caused crashes when playing as a client.

  • Fixed a rendering issue that could cause a crash when some parts were destroyed by an explosion.

  • Fixed an issue where the impulses (from thruster and modded parts) were applied with half strength if the game was running on low fps.

  • Multiple explosion impulses on the character have less effect.

  • More explosion debris particles should now be visible.

  • Mods with no translation for the selected language will now default to English.

  • Added more helpful error messages.

  • Fix for lowest playable resolution (1024x768) defaulting to 1280x720.

  • Lua API updates (no breaking changes).

  • Scripted interactive parts no longer incorrectly show up as buttons when connected to a seat.

  • Character impulses are applied per tick instead of every frame.

  • Fixed "Server started with mismatching developer mode flags" issue when loading games.

  • Fixed a networking related crash.

  • Fixed a crash that was caused by an invalid terrain generation script or an invalid world builder terrain.

Time for us to go back working on Survival mode and Challange mode. Both are coming along nicely! Stay tuned for more Scrap Mechanic news soon!

Explosive Update 0.3.1 is here!

Hi Mechanics!

We have a really fun update for you today! We’ve added a large and small explosive canister to the game. They are highly explosive so please save your creations before playing with them. They do a LOT of damage! There are several ways of making them blow up. One is by shooting them with a Spud Gun. Another way is by making them collide with a strong enough force. Together with the canister, we’ve also added material damage to the game where for example metal blocks take less damage than wood blocks.

We have balanced the canisters collision sensitivity a lot and we think it’s better now. However, we might tweak them more over time.

We have also added smoother movement to the tools and the spud gun in first-person when landing from a jump or looking around. It feels much nicer now.

If you are a modder you will also love the things that we’ve added! Check out our Lua Script API to see what’s new! Lua Script API

  • Added smoother first-person movement for Tools and Spud Gun.

  • Colored particles when destroying colored blocks.

  • Fixed a potato velocity calculation issue.

  • Fixed choppy seated character ragdoll.

  • Ground effects based on the material.

  • Interactable parts now save their data when exported to a blueprint by a client.

  • Fix an issue where connection points would show up in the world when placing imported blueprints.

  • More detailed errors when blueprint import fails.
