Changelog

It’s fixed! №116

Today, we’ve rounded up and will be covering some of the fixes and improvements that we’ve made to the game today and over the past weeks. If you’d like to catch up on every fixed bug, then be sure to check out the changelog section on our website.

If you’ve found a bug that you’d like to report, you can do so on our community bug reporting platform.

Managing Aiming Points

The recent major update introduced the ability to set aiming points in the game. To make it easier for players to get to grips with this new feature, we've added on-screen hints to the tactical map showing which key combinations control these points. You'll only see these hints if your aircraft is capable of setting aiming points in the first place (i.e., it's equipped with GNSS-guided weapons or has an advanced enough navigational system). While we were at it, we also fixed a related bug: previously, the feature only worked if the aircraft currently had GNSS-guided munitions mounted. However, aiming points are also useful for navigation and for other weapon types, so the mechanic now works regardless of the current loadout.

Adding key bindings for aiming point control created conflicts with certain free-look actions, so to avoid this, we removed the new default bindings. However, key bindings were still needed to make full use of the mechanic, particularly for assigning weapons to aiming points. Since we know not everyone has enough spare keys to bind, we've planned the interface to be the main means of controlling the mechanic from the start and so now we’ve made it possible to assign munitions to aiming points without needing separate key bindings at all, they can be assigned simply by using the tactical map. To assign a weapon to a point, just right-click on it (a hint about this now appears at the side of the map), then use the left and right mouse buttons to select as many suitable munitions as you like from the menu that appears, where handy counters show both the current and maximum available amounts.

Radar Display Improvements

With the introduction of electronic support measures (ESM) functionality, the radar/IRST display gained an additional feature: showing ESM data. However, not everyone finds it convenient to bind a separate key or fly with a radar display showing its full set of buttons. So we've added two small new buttons to the minimal radar display view — one to toggle the ESM screen on and off, and another to switch between radar and IRST modes, both of which previously required either a key binding or enabling the display's full button set. Enjoy!

Also, for aircraft that use their weapons as the ESM sensor, the display will now automatically exit ESM mode once all missiles have been expended (as at this point it is non-functional), so you no longer need to switch back to radar mode manually.

Radar Mode Presets

A logic error in the interface meant that, for a number of aircraft, the game was unable to match certain radar modes with their corresponding ranges, causing both to be skipped and left out of the preset list on the respawn and test flight screens. All values are now back in place, so you can once again fully configure your radar the way you want before spawning in.

Distorted Decorators

When decorators are mounted on vehicles, they get rotated in space based on the slope of the armor at the mounting point. As with everywhere else in 3D graphics, this is done using transformation matrices (without getting too deep into linear algebra, these are essentially tables of numbers that point coordinates get multiplied by in order to rotate objects). A bug meant that when mounting on heavily curved armor, this transformation matrix could be calculated incorrectly, resulting in the new X, Y, and Z axes not being perpendicular to each other, which made the decorator appear warped. This has now been fixed, so decorators should display correctly as intended even on especially curved armor.

Déjà Vu!

The last major update introduced a bug where when moving in reverse, friction force was added to the force produced by the tracks or wheels instead of being subtracted from it, which allowed vehicles to reach some rather unseemly speeds. Some players compared it to a racing game and joked about adding a eurobeat soundtrack, while others filed reports. We're grateful to everyone, both for their vigilance and for their great sense of humor!

That’s not all

Check out the full list of fixes and improvements in the update notes below! Here’s some more: keyboard arrow keys can be assigned to actions again, the "Attention to the Map" command works again when clicking the minimap if the cursor is being shown not via the Alt key, fuel jettison after using rocket boosters works again, trees no longer disappear from optics when zooming in, and the in-battle chat window width has returned to its previous value.

Update 2.57.0.32 — Sound Mods Available

Added
  • Sound mods can now be used again
  • Warning message appears when launching the client if a sound mod stops working during a battle
Changed
  • Improved the display of leaderboards for football events featuring a league system with promotion and relegation icons and messages
Fixed
  • Fixed all currently known causes of crashes related to sound mods
  • F-2A F-2A ADTW bug that caused loss of target tracking outside the scan zone in TWS mode
  • Spitfire F Mk IXc bug that prevented selecting a weapon loadout consisting solely of forward-firing armament with no bombs
  • Su-30MKK (China) bug where the LD-10 anti-radiation missile loadout was listed under the air-to-air weapon category instead of air-to-ground
  • Gamepad D-pad cursor control bug that caused it to spontaneously move to a random position on the screen, particularly disruptive in vehicle customization menu
Sound Mods
  • Sound mods can once again be used. If a sound mod stops working during a battle, you’ll see a warning the next time you launch the client. We’re continuing to refine the criteria for detecting sound mod issues, so if you are certain your mod does not affect client stability, you can simply dismiss the message.

  • We have fixed all currently known causes of crashes. However, combining different modifications may still lead to game instability; so use sound mods at your own risk.

Reverting Sound Mod Changes
  • If a modification causes the game to run unstably, or if you are unhappy with the result, you can revert everything to the way it was:

    1. Open the config.blk file and change the line enable_mod:b=yes to enable_mod:b=no, or delete the line entirely.
    1. Delete the mod folder and all its contents from the sound folder.
  • After doing this, War Thunder will revert to using the default sound effects.

Interface
  • Improved the display of leaderboards for football events featuring a league system: promotion and relegation icons are now shown, along with a message indicating that promotion will not occur if there is an insufficient number of participants.
Controls
  • A bug where controlling the cursor with the gamepad D-pad could cause it to spontaneously move to a random position on the screen has been fixed. This was particularly disruptive when applying decals or working with 3D decorations in the vehicle customization menu. (Report).

Arresting Gear

Arresting gear has been added to ground airfields! This allows aircraft equipped with an arresting hook to attach onto cables on the ground, helping aircraft that have them come to a halt quicker when landing.

Aiming Points for Salvo Firing Guided Weapons

All aircraft with GNSS-guided weapons now have the ability to set new waypoints — called aiming points — new markers independent of the point of interest. Essentially, these are simply saved coordinates. You can set up to 10 aiming points (numbered 0 to 9), switch between them, delete and edit them, and move the point of interest to the current aiming point. This can be done either by using the assigned keys or via the tactical map.

Aiming points can also be used for navigation purposes, for example to mark route points or danger zones, or to measure the range to specific targets, such as an airfield, as well as in combat for weapon launch.

Comparison of Missile Parameters & Improved Tracking on the Minimap

Just like the ballistic comparison interface and armor penetration curves introduced in the Line of Contact major update, in Heavy Cavalry we’ve introduced the same but for air missiles. The central part of the window is occupied by a multi-layer trajectory graph, displaying curves for each selected munition in the “Trajectory” (change in the altitude and distance) and “Telemetry” (distance-time and speed-time curves) tabs. The graph dynamically changes as input data changes. This will allow you to see the missile’s characteristics at each point, including altitude, distance travelled, distance to target, and flight time, as well as observe changes in speed. Air combat in a single graph!

Not only that, but we’ve also added more details to munitions displayed on the minimap. Press M (default key) and hover over a missile to see its name and current velocity.

Rewards for Crashed Aircraft

Sometimes you’re dogfighting and the enemy crashes without damaging them, which awarded you nothing. We’ve added a new mechanic to address this: the nearest player who is within close proximity (3 km) of an enemy aircraft that crashes without any damage will get a destruction credit and the reward in Silver Lions, research points and mission score.

The missile you fired also has its own proximity of 3 km, however the system will search for a player within a 3 km radius first, and if there is no player, then the missile radius is used. This means if your missile is after an enemy and closing in and they bail out or crash on purpose (and there is no player within the radius), you’ll also get a destruction credit and a reward as well.

More information can be found in the detailed dev blog here!

Detailed X-Ray and New MFD Screens

We’ve added detailed modules to several older aircraft. We’ve added detailed internals and improved damage models for over 80 vehicles in the Heavy Cavalry major update, so make sure to see if your favourite aircraft has been updated!

We’ve also added new MFD screens so that you can use the new high-tech additions in an even more authentic way.

Man-in-the-Loop: Guidance Mode for Munitions with TV and IR Seekers

In the second half of the 20th century, technological advances led to the development of munitions with TV and infrared homing heads operating on the “fire and forget” principle. This reduced the time the carrier spent in the air defense zone and also enabled the simultaneous engagement of multiple targets. While this is a positive development, the growing capabilities of anti-aircraft weapons and the rising cost of aircraft led to a growing need to launch missiles at ground targets from much greater distances. To address this issue and increase operational flexibility, bombs and missiles were developed with a data link channel to the carrier, transmitting images from the munition’s seeker and allowing to it retarget in flight. This functionality is now available in the Heavy Cavalry major update!

Let’s take a closer look at the specifics of man-in-the-loop mode of the TV and IR seekers in the game. It’s worth mentioning right away that this isn’t full manual control with direct control of the rudders. Correction is limited to target selection in flight — the operator can only designate a new target within the seeker’s field of view, and the autopilot will then automatically adjust course to engage it. It’s also
