How Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived! went

Patch 0.221.13 (Public Test)

Added 3
  • Introduce a new world save system that saves worlds in smaller chunks and stores them in separate folders instead of .db and .fwl files
  • Add extra checks after saving to reduce the risk of corrupt save files
  • Automatically create a backup when loading a world that is not chunked to prevent data loss from potential bugs
Changed 3
  • World saves now only affect modified chunks, making the game save faster
  • Backups are now stored in separate folders
  • Cloud storage now has a limitation on the number of files that can be saved in addition to total size

From Valheim

⚠️ Note: This update is for the Public Test branch of Valheim only, and may therefore be unstable!

Prior to launching this update to the Default version of the game, we want to have a chance to discover bugs and fine-tune the balancing to ensure the best game experience.

Please remember to be considerate towards players who are not participating in the Public Test, as some may prefer to avoid spoilers. As indicated by the access code, please ensure to create backups of your save files before playing.

In this update we’re introducing a new save system for your Valheim worlds! The purpose of this is to make the game save faster, and to decrease the risk of corrupt save files. What the new system means in practice is that the game now saves your world in smaller chunks, and only the chunks that have been modified since the last save will be affected. Worlds will no longer be saved with a .db and a .fwl file, but will instead be saved and stored in separate folders, with the .db file broken down into smaller pieces. Backups will also have their own separate folders. Please note that if you intend to switch between the PTB and the Live branch of the game, it is not advisory to move your files around manually.

If this sounds overly technical, don’t worry – unless you’re frequently moving your files around manually, you won’t notice any difference beyond faster saving times!

For users who are running Valheim with mods, please note that this system has not been tested with mods. While we don’t believe there should be any issues relating to this, modding the game is always done at your own risk.

Detailed Patch Notes:
  • Introducing a new world save system
  • The new save system only affects world saves, character saves remain the same.
  • When saving, only the chunks that have been modified are saved.
  • Instead of saving a world with the .db and .fwl files it’s now stored in folders and the world (.db) is split up in multiple files (chunks).
  • Backups are stored in separate folders.
  • When loading a world that is not chunked, a backup is made first so no data is lost in case of potential new bugs.
  • The save system performs extra checks after saving to make sure it saved properly, which reduces the risk of a corrupt save.
  • There is a new limitation in cloud storage, up until now it was only the total size of all saves. Some platforms have a limit in how many files can be saved, this was previously not a limitation but now there will be way more files saved.

How Patch 0.221.13 (Public Test) went

Patch 0.221.12

Added 1
  • Added release-to-select in the radial menu: hold down the radial menu button/key after the radial menu appears to select an emote by releasing the button/key
Changed 1
  • Reverted crouching to a single press action on gamepad instead of press-and-hold
Fixed 6
  • Fixed annoying resolution setting behavior in windowed mode when changing settings
  • Fixed crash on startup on Windows under specific conditions when using Vulkan
  • Fixed audio stutters in Ashlands
  • Fixed sometimes not being able to apply graphics settings properly the first time after updating from an earlier version
  • Fixed minor UX issues in the graphics settings menu
  • Fixed a null reference exception that started happening in 0.221.10 when mods directly or indirectly accessed preferences at startup

From Valheim

We've got a couple of fixes for you today!

Please also note that playing using Vulkan might currently cause Valheim to be unstable and/or crash. If you want to continue using Vulkan, you can disable the FPS limiters in e.g. the Nvidia Control Panel for a hopefully smoother experience. Rest assured that we're working on a solution for the Vulkan issue, however, and that it should hopefully be back to normal soon!

Patch Notes:
  • Added release-to-select in the radial menu: If you continue holding down the radial menu button/key after the radial menu appears, you can select an emote by releasing the button/key.
  • Reverted crouching being unintentionally changed to a press-and-hold action on gamepad. Now it’s back to being a single press again.
  • Fixed annoying resolution setting behavior in windowed mode when changing settings.
  • Fixed crash on startup on Windows that triggers under specific conditions when using Vulkan.
  • Fixed audio stutters in Ashlands.
  • Fixed sometimes not being able to apply graphics settings properly the first time after updating from an earlier version.
  • Fixed some minor UX issues in the graphics settings menu.

For modders:

  • Fixed a null reference exception that started happening in 0.221.10 when mods directly or indirectly accessed preferences at startup (for example via the localization system).

From Valheim

Greetings vikings!

Today marks the five year anniversary since Valheim was first released into Early Access – and what an incredible five years it’s been!

We want to thank everyone who has been a part of our journey and our community since then, whether you started playing on day one or have just been carried by the valkyrie for the first time. We greatly appreciate every single one of you, and we’re so glad to have you walk this path with us.

For this anniversary you will find a patch live right now for everyone, with some new celebratory items and emotes, along with some quality of life fixes!

If you want to keep the celebration going throughout the week, you can tune in to (https://www.twitch.tv/ard) on Thursday, where there will be a livestreamed concert by the Munich Radio Orchestra! They will be playing music from a bunch of video games, including Valheim.

As you all know, we’re working on Deep North, which will be the final biome update that brings the game into 1.0. While we can’t give an update on that today, we can share that 2026 is going to be a great year for Valheim.

Once again, thank you so much for being with us for five whole years!

Skål!! /The Iron Gate team

  • Updated Game Engine to Unity 6000.0.61f1

Optimizations:

⚠️ Note: This update is for the Public Test branch of Valheim only, and may therefore be unstable!

Prior to launching this update to the Default version of the game, we want to have a chance to discover bugs and fine-tune the balancing to ensure the best game experience.

Please remember to be considerate towards players who are not participating in the Public Test, as some may prefer to avoid spoilers. As indicated by the access code, please ensure to create backups of your save files before playing.

Hello vikings!

It's time for some tweaks and fixes for the PTB, with several improvements for the Bog Witch update. For example, you'll find some adjustments to some of the new meads, some corrections for feasts and the serving tray, as well as a new checkpoint for when the Bog Witch will sell you a scythe handle – now it's after killing Moder rather than after killing Yagluth.

_For everyone that tested the Bog Witch update during patch 0.219.10: There was an issue with build pieces taking rain damage in the last PTB. This has been fixed in this version, but the fix cannot be applied retroactively. For anyone with a large base that needs repairing after participating in the last PTB and do not want to do this manually, we recommend that you restore a backup of your world from before the last PTB version.

If you wish to restore a backup of your world to the state it was pre-BogWitch update, please go to the starting menu, click on the "Manage saves" button, expand the backup list of your world, find the top most backup with name format "worldname_backup-timestamp" (no world auto in the name), select it and then click on the restore button._

From Valheim

It's time to bring this set of fixes over from the PTB! The list has gotten quite long, and so it contains fixes for various different parts of the Ashlands (and Valheim as a whole). ⚠️ Note: This update is for the Public Test branch of Valheim only, and may therefore be unstable!

This patch offers a number of balancing tweaks to the Ashlands! If you want, you can view the numbers for yourself, but the gist of it is that several enemies have had a decreased spawn chance. There has also been a significant change to Flametal spires, so that they no longer sink into the lava once you start to mine them.

Aside from this, there are also some more technical fixes for both Xbox and Mac.

Abbreviated Patch Notes:
  • Balancing tweaks for the Ashlands
  • Multiple bug fixes for Xbox and Mac
Detailed Patch Notes:

Fixes & Improvements:

  • Decreased random spawn chance of multiple enemies in the Ashlands: ** Voltures: reduced spawn chance from 30% to 20% ** Twitchers : Spawn interval increased from 110 to 200, reduced spawn chance from 55% to 25%, maxSpawn decreased from 4 to 3 ** Twitchers : Spawn interval increased from 100 to 160, spawn chance reduced from 60% to 30%, maxSpawn decreased from 5 to 4 ** Charred Archer: Spawn interval increased from 240 to 320, reduced spawn chance from 40% to 20% ** Charred Melee: Spawn interval increased from 240 to 320, reduced spawn chance from 50% to 20% ** LavaBlob: Spawn interval increased from 200 to 260
  • Flametal spires will no longer submerge when mined
  • Voltures no longer make walking sounds when flying
  • Fixed a bug in the block list that made it possible to block yourself

Xbox:

  • Fixed a bug that made the game think that every player in the player list was the local player. This bug was the root cause of multiple issues since privilege checks became completely broken. This impacted Managing Player Communication, Display Name and GamerPic, and Maintaining Multiplayer Session State.
  • Fixed a bug concerning Joinable Game Sessions and Online Play
  • Fixed an error on Xbox One caused by Mouse.current returning null if if no mouse is plugged in

Mac:

  • Instead of polling to check for availability of precise scrolling deltas, which is inefficient, especially on slower Macs, cache the value and only update it when the input layout changes.
  • The scroll modifier native plugin is now only applied when actually scrolling, and the scroll value is now set in Update() instead of reading it every time the scroll wheel function is called. This makes it less resource intensive, noticeable on weaker systems.
  • Fixed an issue to make sure to register the Game Center platform id without the "A:_" prefix, since that would later break the parsing of the platform ID when adding players to the player list since it expects only one underscore to be present in the string. This would've caused issues with muting players via the player list, but with this fix, muting works as expected with MAS players.
